A Critical Moment for SaveABunny

Dear Friend,

There’s no easy way to say this—SaveABunny is facing a very serious financial crisis. We’ve been hit with an unexpected retroactive bill of nearly $34,000 from a former veterinary partner for rabbits treated as far back as 2022.

Regardless of the circumstances, our mission remains the same: Give every rabbit we rescue the chance to be treated with the individual care they deserve.

But we can’t do this important work without your support!

Help Us Tackle This Medical Bill

It’s important for us to state that SaveABunny is and has always operated with sound financial oversight and has well established accounting practices. This massive bill is the result of errors and delays in the clinic’s own billing system. Unfortunately for us, the scale and suddenness of this bill is unprecedented!

Where Our Cases Come From (and Why the Bill Is So High)

For over 25 years we’ve been the safety net for the rabbits that others didn’t want. Those “imperfect” rabbits, such as Prancer from our Late Bloomer Club and Rodney Goldenray. And, remember the very big “Highway Bunny?”

SaveABunny assists over 35 animal shelters— including those in underserved areas who have no other rescue partners! First responders contact us during fires and other disasters and we step up. Recent rescue intakes have come from Rohnert Park, Marin Humane, San Francisco ACC, Peninsula Humane, Santa Cruz, Santa Clara, Contra Costa, and Solano County.

The Vet Bill—and the Lives Behind It

Here are some of the rabbits whose medical care contributed to the $34,000 bill. Others are now healthy and adopted. Some remain in our care. Some, heartbreakingly, did not survive—but all of them were deeply loved and fought for.

Marguerite — from HWY 17 to love

Late one night, construction workers spotted  a giant rabbit dumped by the side of the road  near Highway 17. CHP Santa Cruz stepped in and got her to emergency care. We partnered with Santa Cruz Animal Control and brought “Marguerite” to SaveABunny, where she received diagnostics, treatment, pain management, and safety—funded by donors like you.

When she was stable, Marguerite moved to a permanent home with a gentle companion through Friends of Unwanted Rabbits. SaveABunny continued to pay for all of her medical care, allowing her to simply rest and be loved.

Despite everyone’s best efforts, she passed peacefully this September. Your gifts turned a highway rescue into dignity, and love. Her care represents a significant share of the $34,000 bill.

Angel — Rohnert Park to healing (and home)

Angel (shown here in her new home) arrived via the Rohnert Park Animal Shelter with a leg fracture and dental abscesses that required multiple surgeries.

SaveABunny covered extensive treatment and follow-ups; Angel’s care is also a substantial portion of the $34,000 bill.

The best part: Angel has just been adopted by her medical fosters, who are longtime SaveABunny volunteers. We’ll share her full story next update—today, your gift keeps cases like hers possible.

Give for Angel & Friends

We Also Need Homes — Now

In addition to financial support, we are in urgent need of fosters and adopters for both healthy and medical bunnies. Many of our long-time rabbits are healed and ready; others have ongoing medical needs. All are still living at the rescue simply because the proper placements haven’t yet appeared.

These bunnies have come a long way through medical treatment and emotional rehabilitation. They’re ready for love—and they deserve to start the next chapter in homes like yours. If you’ve been thinking about fostering or adopting, now is the time. Your commitment could change everything for one of these special rabbits.

🌈 The Vet Bill—and the Lives We Loved and Lost

We want to be crystal clear: a meaningful part of this $34,000 bill belongs to rabbits we fought for and then had to say goodbye to. Their care wasn’t wasted—it brought comfort, pain relief, safety, and love. We want you to know who they were.

Late Bloomers we lost (rabbits who came around slowly and beautifully):

Rodney Goldenray, Hot Chocolate, Novio, Prancer, Princess Loppity-Lop

Longtime residents we miss (steady, familiar faces at the rescue):

Oy Vey, Oswald

Gone far too soon (we wish they’d had more time):

Lucky, June, Marshmallow, VeryBerry

Also in our hearts (part of this bill and forever remembered):

Marguerite, Clemons, Lola, Rabbit New Year, Twain, Downy (LLT), Blossum

Every name here represents nights at the vet, careful meds, soft blankets, and hands that never gave up. We carry them forward every time we say yes to the next critical case.
